To form an effective integrative approach to support or treat patients with any disease we must first understand our system to the greatest possible degree, so the highest level of understanding and practice can form part of that integration. As such, this lecture will focus purely on the classical Chinese medical practice of the Tian lineage style of Shang Han Za Bing Lun (Shang Han Lun & Jin Gui Yao Lue) practice. It will include a thorough exploration of the classical understanding of numerous forms of cancer and the processes behind them. We will also study a wide range of common clinical presentations for a number of cancers that are frequently encountered. This theoretical understanding will then be used to show how we can best help support individual patients suffering with cancer, and how this can effectively be achieved alongside other treatments. Chapters 20-22 of the Jin Gui Yao Lue comprise the first treatise written on the treatment of women’s diseases, and it remains as complete and relevant a work now as it was then. This lecture will explore the modern application of this classical work, along with additional relevant strategies included elsewhere in the cannon of the Shang Han Za Bing Lun, so the modern practitioner can learn to apply classical knowledge in the treatment of such conditions as endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, and other menstrual, menopausal and fertility issues. This lecture is focused on the application of the systematic approach outlined in the Shang Han Lun to the treatment of dermatological conditions. So often, the treatment of skin conditions is approached in a way that is a departure from the body of Chinese medical theory and clinical application, with standalone diagnosis and formulas, this lecture will demonstrate that it doesn’t need to be so. This lecture focuses on treating skin conditions from the truly holistic perspective outlined in the classics, as an extension of the treatment of the underlying pathology that is occurring in the individual. This lecture will explore how to apply the systematic diagnostic approach and the modular formula system of the Shang Han Lun to multiple skin conditions, including abscesses, psoriasis, eczema, acne, rosacea, urticaria, herpes, vitiligo and more. This lecture will be an exploration of pulses from a five element perspective. We will examine the tools we already possess from the intricate Tian lineage pulse system from a purely five element angle to gain a deeper understanding of these methods. This will involve plotting herb methods on a five flavour/five element and 19 lines model, and then expanding this to include formulas of the Shang Han Za Bing Lun, and in some cases Tang Ye Jing. This should not only help deepen one’s theoretical understanding of the system, but also aid in clinic when presented with those few complex patients who don’t fit as clearly into the herb/formulas pulses and some stirring of the brain tendon is required to analyse their presentations. This lecture serves as a follow on of last year’s clarification of the basics of the pulse by putting those qualities into a clinical context, but is also perfectly accessible to those who didn’t attend that lecture.
